Helping a hospital get healthier.
Company Profile
Hospital with nearly 2,000 employees. A BHS customer since 2009.
Goals
The customer wished to promote overall health and reduce the instance of preventable diseases, which were driving up insurance costs.
Methods
We launched an incentive-based wellness program, promoted it heavily and monitored it carefully. In particular, we targeted risk habits that drive up costs, like smoking and poor diet. We set out to address underlying causes for risky behavior, such as stress, and also emphasized coordination with each employee’s personal physician.
Results
- 92% of participants improved in at least 1 major health category.
- High-risk tobacco users reduced by 64% since program inception.
- 42% of participants began to improve their eating habits within one year.
- High-risk stress level decreased by 31% from 2010 to 2015.
Providing backup for law enforcement.
Company Profile
Three field offices of a government agency in major American cities; more than 5,000 total employees. A BHS customer since 2005.
Goals
Our customer, a law enforcement agency, was looking to reduce the considerable stress on its employees—and in doing so, reduce the number of medical insurance claims.
Methods
We established an EAP and promoted it heavily, emphasizing the program’s confidential nature. We worked closely with managers, encouraging them to recommend the program to employees who were clearly struggling.
Results
- The improvement was clear and dramatic. EAP use increased sharply, by 22%.
- And as EAP use went up, medical insurance claims dropped drastically: nearly 90% of all cases were resolved within the EAP.
Producing better results.
Company Profile
An established, high-end furniture manufacturer with more than 200 employees. A BHS customer since 2010.
Goals
This self-insured customer wanted to change behaviors pertaining to unhealthy lifestyle decisions and reduce healthcare costs throughout the company, which consists of manufacturing plants spread out over multiple locations.
Methods
Since the company’s production relied heavily on physical labor, we instituted a program of biometric screenings and health risk assessments. The company also asked us to concentrate on lowering the number of employees in high-risk categories, who were raising costs.
Results
- While healthcare costs increased for many of their competitors in 2015, our customer’s costs did not. They credit much of their savings to working with BHS.
- 90% of participants improved in at least one key health category over the previous year’s results.
- Within one year, 13% moved out of the high-risk category for eating habits and alcohol or tobacco use.
